Case Studies in Success
The woman is 38 years old; she has 6 children and her husband living with her. The woman and one of her children are HIV- positive but the husband is not willing to test himself. Three of the children living with her are orphans from her deceased sister-in-law. Her own children are a 21 year old boy working in construction, a 16 year old boy working with loading trucks of sand and a 12 years old girl still in school. The orphans are a 16 years old girl who recently failed Form 5 and because of this reason went to her father for help. Her father lives in a town in the southern part of Tanzania, she left a few months ago and has still not reached the father. The other two children are a 12 year old girl in STD 3 and a 5year old boy in Nursery School.
Her husband works as a peasant farmer and does not have any regular income. At present the woman is selling finger millet and has been doing this for the past 1 ½ year. She also buys maize from nearby villages and sells in her region. She does not earn enough from her business to support her family. At present she earns around 2000 TSH per day (less then 2 USD) on market days which is three days per week. Her wish is with an increased capital to mix her millet with other products and sell a nutrient porridge. She would also like to expand into selling vegetables as well.
