Case Studies in Success
The woman is 45 years old and has three children; she is living with one of the children. Her children are from different men and only one of them is supporting his child. The children are in the ages of a 22 years old boy that stopped STD 7 and lives with his uncle in a nearby village and works as a builder. An 18 years old girl in Form 5 and stays with her father, and a 12 years old girl in Std 6 living with the woman. The woman discovered that she was HIV- positive in December 2007 and her children have not been tested yet. The youngest child’s father died in a road accident in 1995.
At present she is selling second hand clothes, she has done this business since the 1990. She buys skirts at 500 TSH and sell at 800-1000 TSH and blouses at 300 TSH and sells at 600-700 TSH; she also sells small children’s clothes buying at 500 TSH and sells at 800- 1000 TSH. This gives her a profit of approximately 300 TSH (0.30 USD) per item she sells, but she does not sell a lot each day. Some days she does not make enough for food but she tries to have at least one meal per day. Her wish for the future is to continue selling second hand clothes, but with an increased capital she is able to sell a higher grade of clothes (which means better clothes that are easier to sell), which will give her a bigger profit.
